What is a silent disco wellness session and why is it so addictive?

Qué es una silent disco wellness y por qué engancha

If you have ever walked along a Barcelona beach or through a park and seen a group doing yoga, running or dancing in total silence while wearing glowing headphones, you have already seen a silent wellness session. From the outside it looks a little curious. From the inside, it is one of the most enjoyable ways to work out as a group.

What exactly is it?

A silent disco wellness session is a wellbeing activity (yoga, Pilates, running, HIIT, dance, breathwork) where every participant wears wireless headphones. The instructor speaks into a microphone and a mixer sends their voice and the music to every headset at once. There are no speakers: the sound only exists inside the headphones.

The technology comes from silent discos, the headphone parties invented so people could dance where noise was restricted. At EKKO we have spent years renting and setting up these systems for parties, weddings and corporate events, and with Wellness Tribe we have brought it to what we love most: moving outdoors as a community.

Why it works so well

You hear perfectly, wherever you are

In a normal outdoor class, people at the back miss half the cues because of wind, traffic or waves. With headphones, the instructor's voice is just as clear in the back row as in the front, and at your own volume. That transforms classes where technique matters, such as Pilates or yoga.

It shuts out the noise and pulls you in

The headphones create a bubble. The chatter around you disappears and all that is left is the music and the voice guiding you. Focusing becomes much easier, and in activities like meditation or breathwork that feeling of being alone with your breath, even in a crowd, is exactly the point.

Music lifts the energy

Running or doing HIIT to good music is more motivating, and a steady beat is known to help you sustain effort. In our running club, for example, a DJ mixes live from a bike and the whole group runs to the same pulse. The kilometres feel shorter.

You can do it in amazing places

With no speakers, we disturb nobody. That opens the door to sessions on beaches, terraces, hotel rooftops, gardens and seafront promenades where a class with loud music would never be allowed.

And it is social

There is something hilarious about taking your headphones off in the middle of a dance session and hearing nothing but people singing. Those moments break the ice and mean that people who came alone end up chatting to their neighbours. That is why we say you come to move, but you stay for the people.

What a session looks like, step by step

  1. Arrival and headphones. You check in and pick up your headphones. We show you how to switch them on and adjust the volume.
  2. Sound check. Before we start, the instructor speaks and we make sure everyone can hear clearly.
  3. The session. You follow the class like any other, but with the voice and music in your ears. If there are several channels, each light colour is a different one.
  4. Wrap-up. Stretching, a group photo and headphones back. Quite often it carries on over coffee or brunch.

What activities can you do?

Almost anything with someone leading and music in the background. At Wellness Tribe we run a running club, hatha and vinyasa yoga, Pilates, HIIT, salsa, ice baths with breathwork, women's circles, nutrition talks, padel with music and, of course, coffee raves: morning parties with DJs and coffee instead of alcohol.

Is it for me?

If you want to move, switch off from the noise and meet people, yes. You do not need to be fit or experienced: every activity has options for all levels, and the headphones make it easy to follow the class even the first time. Lots of people come on their own, so do not worry if you have nobody to come with.

Where to try it in Barcelona

We publish every Wellness Tribe session on our events page and on Luma, where you can sign up in a couple of clicks. Follow us on Instagram to hear about upcoming sessions and come and give it a go. Chances are you will be back.
